Theft-Related Auto Insurance Claims Begin to Rise on July 4

Fireworks displayThe height of summer is prime time not only for barbeques and ballgames, but for vehicle theft as well, according to the National Insurance Crime Bureau and maker of car locating devices LoJack July and August mark the rise of automobile thefts.

The NICB says that a number of things can happen to vehicles stolen by professional car thieves, adding that these criminals are behind the vast majority of auto thefts committed in the U.S. The thieves, who frequently target the most common models on the road, can do a number of things with the stolen car. Some simply resell the vehicle, others strip it for parts at a chop shop, while a few even use it as a getaway car for violent crimes, according to the NICB.

Experts say that car owners should make sure that their policies protect them in the event of theft, particularly if they have a frequently stolen make and model.
