Knowing extent of auto insurance coverage can lead to better protection

Drivers should know what their insurance will cover in the event of an accident.Car policies have multiple layers, and the more a consumer knows about the extent of the coverage, the better protected they may be. The various sections included in an auto policy are medical payments coverage, liability coverage, vehicle damage coverage, underinsured motorist’s coverage, and a driver’s responsibilities following an accident, Greg Roberts writes in the Aiken Standard.

States have different minimum requirements for certain types of coverage. Drivers must determine if these standards provide enough protection for them. When a driver discusses what type of auto insurance is best suited for them, they should take some factors into consideration, including the age of the car and how much they can afford to pay out of pocket if something does occur, Roberts said.

"What happens if your vehicle is struck by another vehicle whose operator has minimal amounts of insurance, or who may be operating the vehicle illegally and thus has no insurance?" Roberts said. It’s questions like these that are important to ask in order to become as knowledgeable as possible about the extent of auto insurance coverage.ADNFCR-3298-ID-19758263-ADNFCR
