Eligible Drivers Can Find Discounts on Auto Insurance

Red automobileMany of them are state-mandated, but some insurance companies offer unique discounts that aren’t immediately evident to consumers, insurance expert John Swigart told CBS.

Most insurers will offer discounts between 15 percent and 25 percent for drivers who have maintained a clean record for a period of time, usually between three and five years, said Swigart. Additionally, motorists who have completed a defensive driving course or have equipped their vehicle with safety features can often cut their premiums by 5 percent and 30 percent, respectively.

Members of certain trade organizations, like the medical field, or alumni from some universities can earn between 5 percent and 15 percent off their bills. Some companies offer similar discounts to teachers who join national or state education associations. Current or former members of the military can also find discounts, said the expert.

Consumers can reduce costs by purchasing different types of insurance from a single company, said Swigart.

The savings vary between different states and companies. Ultimately, finding cheap auto insurance can be as simple as asking for eligible discounts.
