Car Insurance Co. Suggests Car-Care Tasks Before Traveling

Close shot of tire treadsWith an uptick in holiday travel this Thanksgiving and with 94 percent of those travelers doing so by car, auto insurance provider AAA is reminding motorists to perform a few preventative maintenance checks before hitting the road. While taking such precautions won’t completely prevent an accident from occurring, they can help reduce their likelihood.

The car insurance coverage provider says it’s important for motorists to check their vehicles’ tire pressure and tread depth. According to the Rubber Manufacturers Association (RMA), nearly 4 million motorists could be driving with a bald tire. Furthermore, research by RMA reveals more than 60 percent of drivers say they don’t know how to tell if a tire’s treads are no longer good.

Performing a “penny test,” is one way to check a tire’s treads. Simply place the coin in the tire with the head up. If the president’s head can be scene, it’s time to purchase new tires.

“Your tires are a critical vehicle safety component,” says RMA’s president and CEO, Charles Cannon. “Worn-out tires cannot grip the road properly, increase stopping distances and can contribute to skidding or loss of vehicle control.”

In addition, the insurance provider recommends that drivers check wiper blades, batteries and their emergency road kits.
