The Hartford Extends Auto Insurance Partnership with AARP

Members of AARP now have a longer time to take advantage of the auto insurance discount available through its relationship with the Hartford, after a recent extension lengthened the nonprofit’s partnership with the insurer through January 2023.

The Hartford offers AARP members auto coverage through the AARP Automobile Insurance Program, which was created in 1984 through a partnership that has also yielded research on traffic safety for the elderly.

“Over our almost three-decade relationship with AARP, we have built an industry-leading personal insurance program designed to serve and protect AARP members on the road,” Andy Napoli, The Hartford’s president of consumer markets and enterprise business services, said in a statement.

According to the insurer, its policyholders who are AARP members get a discount on their auto policies and also have other AARP-specific savings available to them.

The Hartford Heads Center for Research on ‘the 50-plus Population’

The insurer also heads The Hartford Center for Mature Market Excellence (CMME), which has introduced products and services geared toward “researching and understanding the needs of the 50-plus population.”

According to research from AAA, car crash rates for older drivers are falling. However, the risk of death for an older driver involved in a crash is likelier than in other age groups.

Researchers from the CMME and Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT)—whose fields of expertise ranged from ergonomics to gerontology—compiled a list last year that ranked the top 10 car technologies that older drivers need. The list included many electronic systems that warn about blind spots and assist braking to prevent crashes.

According to The Hartford, its employees also undergo “specialized training” at the CCME that aids them in serving older policyholders. Mitch Stevens, senior vice president of financial products and services for AARP Services, Inc., said that The Hartford has provided “exceptional customer service” since the beginning of the partnership decades ago.

Consumers can gauge how much their coverage will cost through an “auto insurance calculator” that is available through the partnership between The Hartford and AARP. AARP also offers coverage for homes, motor homes and recreational vehicles through The Hartford.

The Hartford recently received some of the highest overall scores in a Market Force Information survey of more than 20,000  auto coverage consumers.
