Widget Created by Car Insurance Co. Could Help Prevent Distracted Driving

A stand-alone smartphone with social media displayed on screenState Farm Insurance is releasing a mobile tool aimed at putting the brakes on distracted driving. Car accidents caused by drivers distracted by their cell phones have become a large problem as more people obtain the technology.

In response, the auto insurance company has created a free “On the Move” widget for Android smartphone users. The widget allows phone users to create custom auto-responses for incoming text messages. With this piece of technology, drivers can set a response notifying people who are trying to get a hold of them that they are busy.

“It is our hope that this widget will prevent crashes and save lives,” said State Farm’s vice president of strategic resources, Laurette Stiles. “This new service will help drivers manage the temptation to read or respond to text messages when they are behind the wheel.”

A 2005 study by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety indicated that a person’s risk of getting into a vehicle accident is four times higher when the driver uses a handheld cell phone. Use of the cell phone app or widget may be just enough to help some people pay more attention to the road and prevent accidents. Anyone who knows how accidents affect auto insurance rates also knows that driving while distracted can easily become a financial burden as well due to an accident caused by a distraction.
